PHYSIOLOGY
Department of Physiology
Established in the year 2008, the Department of Physiology is one of the well-established pre-clinical departments in Shri Sathya Sai Medical College, SBV Chennai campus, located at Ammapettai Nellikuppam, Chengalpattu District, Chennai – TN. This department aligns its objectives time to time in synchrony with the guidelines laid by University and the Institution to improve the quality in academic and administrative fronts. The department adopts quality management strategies in academic activities provided by the University IQAC.
Physiology is a basic science that helps in building a strong foundation in the field of biomedical and health-science education. This subject bridges basic science and medicine. By studying physiology, learners can understand why organs work the way they do and how they adapt during health & disease.
Our department aims to impart enriched subject knowledge to the medical and Paramedical students.. We run courses for MBBS phase I, allied health sciences, Physiotherapy and Nursing students. Our department is versatile and resourceful in teaching academics & medical research. We combine teaching, research, and clinical relevance and serve a holistic view for the learner. We are competent and have an aptitude for training students in clinical skills. Students learn essential concepts such as neurophysiology, cardiovascular regulation, respiration, renal function, endocrine control, metabolism, and muscle physiology. In a nutshell, our Department serves as a dynamic hub where learners build a strong scientific foundation, researchers push the boundaries of knowledge, and future healthcare professionals gain insight into the mechanisms that keep the body alive and functioning.
The department occupies a larger floor space with four big laboratories viz., Haematology lab, Clinical lab, Amphibian lab and Research & exercise physiology lab.

Teaching and Training
Every year, the department imbibes 250 MBBS students and imparts them with a deeper understanding of the Physiological concepts by our knowledgeable and experienced faculty. The curriculum delivery to the students is based on CBME designed by NMC. It is an aligned method wherein the topics are integrated between the departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. Vertical integration with Para clinical and clinical disciplines are also conducted. The subject content is classified into must know, nice to know and desirable to know categories and taught to the students.
The teaching methods are learner cantered with specific learning objectives for each topic delivered to the students. Students have access to e-learning materials of the topics being covered. Learning resources are shared with the students in the forms of e-Physiology text books, power point slides, clinical examination videos, clinical case sheets writing and problem charts. Periodic seminars, LMS assignments, Field visits to animal labs are conducted for students. Students also have early clinical exposure in the form of Problem Oriented Learning and case based learning integrating with respective clinical departments. Also small group teaching is conducted for the students every week so that the students can have one to one interactions and discussions with the faculty of our department.
The department also trains them in Hematological and Clinical skills. We also demonstrate few diagnostic tests like ECG, Spirometry, and Pulse wave analysis, Stethography, Electromyography so that the students obtain prior knowledge about these common investigations before entering into the clinical year.
Assessments are done periodically by conducting series of Formative and Internal exams for the students. Students’ enrichment Programs like Physiology Quiz, Seminars, Essay competitions and medal exams are organized to enhance knowledge, learning, competence and soft skills among students.
Our department also imparts Physiology education to BSc Nursing courses and other Allied Health Sciences departments’ viz., BSc. Radiology and Imaging Technology, BSc.Medical Laboratory Technology, BSc.Operation Theatre and Anesthesia Technology and BSc. Optometry and BSc. Physiotherapy.
