OPHTHALMOLOGY
Services
The Department of Ophthalmology at Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute provides comprehensive, ethical, and accessible eye care services while fulfilling its role as a teaching and tertiary care institution. The department is committed to excellence in patient care, medical education, and community ophthalmology, serving both urban and rural populations.
All ophthalmic surgeries are performed by experienced faculty members, with active participation of postgraduate trainees under close supervision, ensuring patient safety and adherence to high academic and ethical standards.
Cataract Surgery Services:
Cataract surgery is a key service of the Department of Ophthalmology, aimed at restoring vision and reducing avoidable blindness. The department offers comprehensive cataract care, including detailed preoperative evaluation, biometry, surgery, and postoperative follow-up. Both Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) with Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens (PCIOL) implantation and phacoemulsification with PCIOL are routinely performed. SICS is a safe and cost-effective procedure, especially suitable for mature cataracts, while phacoemulsification is a minimally invasive technique that enables faster recovery and excellent visual outcomes.
Glaucoma Surgery – Trabeculectomy with Mitomycin-C (MMC)
The department offers surgical management for patients with medically uncontrolled or advanced glaucoma. Trabeculectomy with Mitomycin-C (MMC) is performed in appropriate cases to create a controlled aqueous outflow pathway, thereby reducing intraocular pressure and preventing further optic nerve damage.
Lacrimal Surgery – Dacryocystectomy (DCT)
Dacryocystectomy is performed for patients with chronic dacryocystitis, particularly in cases where dacryocystorhinostomy is not indicated. The procedure involves surgical removal of the diseased lacrimal sac, effectively eliminating chronic infection and recurrent discharge.
Pterygium Surgery
Pterygium excision is routinely performed for patients with progressive pterygium causing visual impairment, chronic irritation, or cosmetic concern. Surgical management aims to restore ocular surface integrity while achieving good functional and cosmetic outcomes.

The Minor OT caters to the management of common ocular conditions and supports timely intervention with minimal patient discomfort. Procedures routinely performed include incision and curettage for chalazion, lid abscess drainage, Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsular opacification, peripheral iridotomy for the prevention and management of angle-closure glaucoma, and postoperative suture removal following Small Incision Cataract Surgery. All procedures are carried out by experienced faculty members with active participation of residents under close supervision.
