Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute provides comprehensive, ethical, and patient- centered eye care while functioning as a teaching and tertiary care referral unit. The department is well equipped with modern diagnostic facilities including slit lamp biomicroscopy, refraction services, applanation tonometry, A-scan biometry, B-scan ultrasonography, Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), enabling accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring of a wide spectrum of ocular disorders.

A wide range of surgical services are offered, with cataract surgery forming a major focus. Both Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) with PCIOL and phacoemulsification with PCIOL are routinely performed. The department also provides glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy with Mitomycin-C), pterygium excision, lacrimal surgery (dacryocystectomy), and various minor ophthalmic procedures including chalazion incision and curettage, lid abscess drainage, Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, peripheral iridotomy, and postoperative suture removal.

All surgeries are conducted by experienced faculty with supervised participation of postgraduate trainees, ensuring high standards of patient safety and academic training. The department actively engages in community ophthalmology through regular outreach camps, glaucoma awareness activities, eye donation fortnight programs, and academic events such as guest lectures, CMEs and workshops.

Recognized for undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MS Ophthalmology), and optometry training programs, the department remains committed to excellence in patient care, education, and prevention of avoidable blindness, while providing services free of cost to all patients.

Department of Ophthalmology of Shri Satya Sai Medical College and Research Institute was started in the Year 2008.Our Department aims at providing Quality care in field of Ophthalmology especially for the people of low economic group in and around the rural areas at a very affordable cost to the patient with best quality of vision to the patients.

Our Department started Post Graduate MS Degree with intake of One student per year from 2016 onwards. Also we have B.Sc (Optometry) course started in the year 2015

The department of ophthalmology is robust and enthusiastic and excels in teaching, research and surgical service. With a dedicated set of faculty, post graduates and Optometry students, the department offers a wide range of clinical specialities, takes part in outreach programmes and provides the state of the art surgical management for cataracts with premium IOL implantation on par with the top corporate hospitals in the state.

The following speciality clinics are operative

1) – Neuro-ophthalmology clinic: conducted every Wednesday
2) – Glaucoma Clinic: every Thursday
3)- Retina Clinic: every Friday
4)- Strabismus clinic: every Saturday

In addition to routine refraction, the optometry students are well versed in conducting a thorough orthoptic work up.

The Best practices of the department involves training the optometry intern students to assist in cataract and phacoemulsification procedures, and secondly to make available to the rural population premium foldable intraocular lenses at a very affordable and subsidised cost.

The faculty have a keen interest in research and have published and presented in indexed journal and international conferences, respectively.

The Academic activities of the department are highly beneficial to the post graduates and many of the students aided by the faculty have presented papers in state and national level conferences and won accolades for the same
